Philanthropist Spotlight: Heather Singleton

Name: Heather Singleton (she/her)

Hometown: Charleston, SC

How did your philanthropy story get started?

Growing up in church, philanthropy was always preached to us. Giving to others was how we showed God's love. But I saw philanthropy in action at nine years old while being on the receiving end of someone else's giving. That taught me the importance of supporting others.

What does philanthropy mean to you?

Philanthropy is the free offering of time, talent, and treasure to a cause that aligns with my personal vision and values. This allows the support of multiple organizations with a focus on initiatives and not just the organizations that provide these direct services.

How do you support your community?

I support the Midlands area by providing resources to groups that provide basic needs, the arts, and mental health to our community. I give monetarily, volunteer on committees, participate in service days, and use my voice in the community to champion for the causes that I am passionate about.

How can others get involved and give?

Giving is transcends the dollar. Finances are important, but servitude bridges the gaps. Nonprofit organizations often lack physical resources, and serving on committees, councils, or even getting our hands dirty with service days share a more substantial impact at times. Most of all, these methods involve you being present and showing up for those in need.
